Signal Shed / Ryan Lingard Design
In an effort to respect these natural surroundings, the Signal Shed was conceived as a small home, which provides access to the outdoors and causes minimal disturbance in doing so. For its foundation, the structure was built on a series of pier footings. The blackened rain screen cladding helps it recede into the shadows of the surrounding mountains and trees. Also, the shed’s ‘charcoaled’ exterior references the burned trees found onsite and recalls the past use of Signal Mountain as a smoke signal point for the Nez Perce tribe.
This mountain (which has been renamed after Gen. Howard who defeated Chief Joseph) is a backdrop for the primary view from the Signal Shed. A large sliding door opens the interior space to the view and outdoors so one still feels like they’re camping while inside. A single hatch window opens to frame a view of the Wallowa Lake Tramway and Signal Mountain. Windows, which face the forest on the other three elevations, are shuttered by the same slats that wrap the exterior. Thus, The Signal Shed can be closed and fully secured when left for long stretches of time. Inside, a loft, simple wood stove, kitchen counter and collapsible dining room table provide adequate accoutrements for rustic domestic living. At night, the interior light glows from behind the cedar slats as a series of vertical slivers.
To limit the project’s environmental impact and cost the original structure was built by the owner/designer using recycled windows and hardware and reclaimed siding and has no traditional utility connections. All materials were carried in from the main road and with a generator providing electricity. The western red cedar cladding was sourced to Willamina Portable Saw Mill, a portable saw mill company specializing in reclamation of fallen and discarded trees. The windows, door and barn door hardware were purchased at the Rebuilding Center in Portland. Interior casework and flooring is from IKEA. All other wood was sourced to local mills found in Wallowa and Union County through local distributors.

Western Red Cedar Log Home Siding
Though log homes are lovely, sometimes owners decide they do not want to have to only look at wooden walls all of the time. A common compromise is Western Red Cedar log home siding. Instead of finishing the entire home with stacked log walls, siding allows the flexibility of building a stick framed home and covering it with a product which gives the appearance of a log home on the outside.
Log siding comes in two forms. The first is a style which mimics a milled log home. Most commonly the siding is a 2×8 inch rounded siding with a row of tongue and groove on the top and bottom for installation. The 2×8 is the coverage face of the siding plus the tongues and groove. So a 2×8 piece of siding would cover about a 7 1/4 inch of wall space.
The second style of log siding is a handcrafted. The siding measures 4×12 including the ship lap tongues. The outer surface is rounded and the under side is concave cut. This concave back encourages the siding to check on the backside, out of sight. The face of the siding can be either smooth or hand peeled. The hand hewn appearance is gained through a draw knife being applied to each of the surfaces before it is installed on the home.
You may have noticed the difference above between the ship lap and the tongue and groove. Ship lapped siding only has a tongue on the top side for installation. Tongue and groove on the other hand is applied to both the tops and bottom of each piece of siding. To help secure both styles to the side of a building it is not a bad idea to screw into the siding from the interior of the framed wall. Occasionally applied extra screws help to keep the siding from bubbling or bowing. Unlike a solid log wall, the siding is affixed to an existing wall. This makes warping a potential problem that is unique to log siding, but does not affect a stacked solid log wall.
Many different log species can be used for siding. The most common pine. This is an inexpensive and easily obtained species. For choosier customers Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar are commonly chosen. The darker richer hues of both of these species is appealing to many. Western Red Cedar log home siding is the top choice for areas with insect infestation, humid climates, or excessive rain. The natural cedar oils help prevent damage to the logs and decay.
