EXCLUSIVE: Newspaper thefts rise as 'couponing' reality show strikes chord

A new reality television show that teaches bargain hunters how to collect and use food coupons in a tough economy has unintentionally resulted in something else ---- newspaper thefts.

Grabbing papers from sales racks and driveways for the inserted coupons isn't endorsed by creators of "Extreme Couponing," which ends its first season Wednesday. The show profiles people who offer creative strategies for saving money.

Jennifer Freeman, one of the "extreme couponers" featured on the show, says some of those strategies include getting multiple Sunday newspapers for the inserts and filing them by month in storage bins, to be retrieved later when an item goes on sale. She also says that couponers shouldn't make purchases unless the items can be consumed or donated.

"Watch the sales and stock up when a price is low enough for you. Remember, sales roll around over and over. If you miss one, there will be another sale coming soon," Freeman says in a profile recently posted on the show's website.

Regionally, The Orange County Register, based in Santa Ana, and Lee Enterprises Inc., the publisher of the North County Times and The Californian, are having problems that appear related to the show: papers stripped from racks without coins deposited in the box, and customers asking to return papers for additional ones in order to build up their stash of discounts. Phone calls also have increased from subscribers complaining about missing coupon inserts.

Similar reports have come from newspapers in Iowa, New York and Utah.

In one case at the Register, a woman returned an armload of papers for more because, she said, they didn't contain inserts. She was seen in her car pulling out the inserts after she traded in the old stack.

"People (clerks and vendors) are telling us the papers are incomplete, with the coupons gone," said Larry Riley, senior vice president in charge of circulation at The Orange County Register.

A similar surge in demand has been reported at the North County Times and The Californian.

"We have recently started seeing customers buying multiple subscriptions for the same household ---- as high as 20 per household," said Mark Henschen, circulation director for the two papers. "We are seeing a rather dramatic uptick in folks trying to get their hands on our paper in a multitude of ways," he said.

"Tight household budgets are of concern, and people are going to the newspaper to see how they can save hundreds of dollars," Riley said. "We are just not pulling out of this (recession) quickly. People used to never cut coupons for whatever reason. Maybe they thought it was beneath them. Now that isn't the case, as a clerk rips the coupons across the scanner quickly and it's not as embarrassing or time-consuming.
