From the great heights of Mortal Kombat and Space Invaders to the crushing lows that brought about the sad, painful death of the company, 411's Matthew Sforcina looks at the rise and fall of Midway in this week's Ask 411 Games!

But although Midway is, rightly or wrongly, remembered mostly for those two games, they played an integral part in the history of video games, with over 50 years as a company, coming from a small amusement game component making company to one of the most important video game companies in history before, eventually, being sold for a tiny price to a media conglomerate. Midway began as ‘Midway Mfg. Co.' in 1958. They made mechanical games, the precursor to the modern arcade video game. They would be in amusement parks, and scattered across the country in various locales, or travelling with fairgrounds. They would be mechanical in nature, to play you would roll a ball or shoot actual pellets at targets, and everything would be mechanically scored. Midway's first game would be Redball, a ball popping game, where the object was to get a Bingo type line of balls in 5 by 5 grid via bouncing balls up with a spring system, released in 1958. The company made several different games until it was bought by Bally in 1969, the EA of Pinball and Slot Machines before the advent of Electronic Games. (That is, if EA had a history of mergers, takeovers and rebrandings that would make even the most dedicated business historian's brains melt). See, ‘Video Games', as these newfangled things were soon called, had begun to make a little noise, with ‘Computer Space' being the first ever commercially sold coin operated video game, released in November 1971. The developers, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, liked the game (a port of ‘Spacewar!', one of the first and most important video games in history) but it was far too complicated for the average consumer, it was thought. (Not today's average gamer, but we have decades of training now…) But it was a start, and gave them an in. Bally certainly thought it was interesting, and they struck a deal with the company the two men made to begin working on such items, Syzygy Engineering, later changed to Atari Inc due to legal issues.
