Adopt-A-Thon Marathon: Bring Home A Cat Or Dog For Free

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- The Washington Animal Rescue League is hosting a special Adopt-a-thon to help rescued animals find a new home.

Jim Monsma, Director of Communications, says,"We're gonna open our doors at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, the 6th of August and won't close until Sunday evening at 8 p.m. Were dropping our regular adoption fees."

It's called Home Sweet Home Adopt-a-thon. The 33-hour adoption marathon is a "pay what you will" for priceless animals. You could walk out with a cat or dog for free.

The animal rescue is at full capacity with more than 120 cats and dogs.  Unfortunately, it's what many shelters are facing.

They are animals that see the worst of human kind and natural disasters.

The no-kill shelter and shelters across the country are fighting their own battle: overcrowding.

Monsma says, "We don't know why, but it seems this summer in particular the increase in abandoned animals is severe. People go on vacation and leave their pets. It could be the economy. We don't know why. "

With so many sad stories there are successful outcomes too.  Roma, a beautiful black lab from upstate New York was rescued from a house where there owner was hoarding animals.  But now he's been adopted by a veteran who is suffering from PTSD.

Monsma said, " We work with a group, that places pets with soldiers-veterans who are suffering from PTSD. They found that just having a dog around can be very therapeutic for these veterans in their recovery. Veterans could use the help in their recovery, and everybody wins."

Roma is just one of so many dogs and cats who are getting a second chance at life.

Currently the shelter has rescued animals from West Virginia, Florida and places across the country because shelters are closing down or are over crowded.  They have dogs from hurricane ravaged Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  Dogs have come from hoarding and abusive situations or were to be euthanized.

The medical team nurses the cats and dogs back to health so they can be ready for adoption.

Amelia, a gray cat, came to the shelter several months ago with a broken leg.

It was so badly broken that it had to be amputated.Now the cat is healthy and the medical staff said she is doing well and probably does not even know she is a cat with three legs.

Jan Rosen, Medical Director, said that the ultimate goal is to get the psychological stability by finding a house for ever: "When they arrive, they are really stressed out, they do not trust people and they are just kind of fear and .. The most important thing we can do for them is to find a home for them. them out of there, be set for life.
