Vote for your favorite farmers market

If you love your local farmers market, then tell the world! Or at least the nation: Online voting opened today (June 1) for America's Favorite Farmers Markets Contest , a national competition meant to raise interest in eating locally and supporting nearby farmers.

Voting runs through Aug. 31. Top vote-getters in four market categories -- boutique (15 or fewer vendors), small (16 to 30 vendors), medium (31 to 55 vendors) and large (56 or more vendors) -- will win the title "America's Favorite Farmers Market" for 2011 and will be featured in Epicurious.com. They will also win prizes from American Farmland Trust and other contest sponsors.

Several Southern Wisconsin farmers markets are on the current voting list, including Brookfield, Butler, Dane County, East Side Green, Fondy, South Milwaukee Downtown, Tosa and Westown , but others likely will be added as market managers sign up. (For instance, the West Allis Farmers Market isn't yet on the list.) The voting page includes a file voters can print out for the managers of their favorite markets to fill out to join the fun.

Check out the full list of markets in Southeastern Wisconsin and the interactive map at the Journal Sentinel's website.

He would talk a lot about how he used to sell at the West Allis farmers market with his father. "Farming was just a part of him," she said. "It was his passion. He loved being outside. He loved being with his family. And the pumpkins, that was a family

Overnight Farmer: Victory Garden Installed!

As a family, we put our heads together over our sketch of plants (we planted of course by color family), dug holes, and planted what we got at the West Allis Farmer's Market. Kellner was the official sponsor of the Victory Garden blitz for this May,

Excitement of the Season : - JenEhr Family Farm

It doesn’t matter how many seasons we start here at JenEhr; there is an excitement with the first two weeks.  Sometimes the excitement is fear, trying to figure out what to put in the box that first week.  Sometimes the excitement is exuberance as we look at all of the wonderful produce ready to harvest, making decisions between which items to put in the weekly share.  If each end of the scale is 1 (fear) to 10 (exuberance), we’re at an 8 this season.  The outside spring weather has been cold, wet and more cold.  But inside the hoophouses and the new haygrove three season growing, Farmer Paul has an ample supply of produce to make your first share a joy to behold.

While the weather has given Paul fits and starts, it’s the minute details of mail merge between word processing and spreadsheet software that’s caused a few hours of lost sleep.  Let me first apologize for any (and all) contradictory, convoluted and sometimes confusing information in the logistics letter.  The good news (because yes, I am always looking to make lemonade out of lemons) is that many of you emailed with updated email addresses and other data corrections.  I’m feeling more confidents that I’ve got the information more correct than when I started.

So here’s the lowdown on the logistics:

Pick up Codes F = Farm Pick Up Ft = Farm Tuesday Pick Up (Fr is Farm Thursday) 2’s start pick up the second week (June 20) GZ = Ground Zero on Williamson Street, Tuesday 5PM to 7PM GH = Good Harvest Silvernail Rd in Pewaukee, Thursday 4PM-7PM W = Westside Community Market on Saturday, 7AM to 10:30AM WA = West Allis Farmers Market WAr is Thursday pick up, noon to 5PM WAs is Saturday pick up, 1PM to 5PM CC = Crema Café on Monona Drive in Monona, Sunday 1PM to 3PM 1 or 2 as in Ft1 denotes half share and designates first or second week of the season as your first pick up 1’s start pick up the first week (June 13) 2’s start pick up the second week (June 20) No number means you pick up every week

When it comes to chicken shares, you’ll get an email Monday evening letting you know that you have chicken shares to pick up that week.  Same goes with reminder emails, every Monday evening with a .pdf newsletter attached.  The newsletter is also available at the website ( www.wisconsingrown.com ) Tuesday morning.

Ok, enough logistics, codes and mail merge nightmares, let’s eat!!!
