Tambourey returns to the Acres, Peeples Jr. wins Thunder Roadsters

EUREKA -- An original returned, but a familiar face took the checkered flag.

In 2006, the first night that Thunder Roadsters raced at Redwood Acres, Lonnie Tambourey took second place.

On Saturday -- for the first time since that night -- Tambourey returned to the Acres, driving Donn Cole's car No. 9. And, for a guy who hasn't competed in the Roadsters for five years, Tambourey still did well, finishing third behind Paul Peeples Jr. and Thomas Payne.

Peeples Jr., the 2007 and 2008 Roadsters champion, took the trophy dash and the 11-car main event Saturday.

It took almost 15 minutes to complete the first two laps of the main event because, after just one lap, Fergy Ferguson in car No. 21 and Chris Sarvinski in car No. 23 bumped and spun together near the wall opposite the grandstand, causing the yellow flag to be dropped. The fire crew walked on to quickly and efficiently sweep and prepare the asphalt so the race could continue.

When the race resumed, Peeples Jr. moved up from the back to take the lead by lap six. He led Randy Olson in car No. 11 and Payne in car No. 66 until the 19th lap, when Olson developed engine problems and left the oval. This moved up Payne, the 2010 Roadsters champion, to second place, and Tambourey from fourth to third. That order remained, as Peeples Jr. took the checkered flag after 25 laps.

Robert Miller, who took a heat in the Roadsters in car No. 82, originally raced in the Limited Stock class at the Acres.

”Bruce Ziemer, my boss at the time (both worked for the City of Eureka Water Department) suggested I try his Roadster, and I loved it,” said Miller.

Now in his fourth year driving a Thunder Roadster, Miller enjoys that, “The competition is great.” Ziemer also competed on Saturday, driving Roadster No. 5.

In other action on Saturday at the Raceway, Jim Redd (car No. 44) took first in Real Stock, Ken Barrett (car No. 7) won the Roadrunners, and Larry Pries (car No. 01) took the checkered flag in the Sportsman class.

In the Real Stock, Ryan Robinson (car No. 47) placed second and Ryan Walters (car No. 12) took third.

Nick Hansen (car No. 33) placed second in the Roadrunners, ahead of Robbie Nelson (car No. 24) who finished third after dealing with tire problems in the pits.

Brandon Barnwell (car No. 56) placed second to Pries in the Sportsman, while Angelo Marcelli (car No. 25) took third.
