Local inmate found dead in jail cell
BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WALA) - A local man accused of kidnapping his Father with a machete was found dead over the weekend inside his Baldwin County Jail cell.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, the Foley Police Department and the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office area currently conducting a death investigation on Zachery Lamar Barber.
On Sunday, May 30, 2011, corrections officers at the Baldwin County Sheriff's Correction's Center found inmate Barber hanging inside his cell, dead from an apparent suicide. Barber was alone inside his cell at the time of his death and his body was discovered just after 6 a.m. during routine cell checks.
Paramedics were called, but attempts to save Barber were unsuccessful. Barber’s body was transported to Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsy.
Barber was accused of kidnapping his adoptive Father with a machete back in January, 2011. Daphne Police told FOX10 News at the time of the incident that Barber forced his Father to drive to a Daphne bank from Fairhope.
"Made him drive to the bank here in Daphne and attempted to force him to get money out of the bank to give to him," said Cpl. Jason Vannoy with the Daphne Police Department back in January 2011. When the two arrived at the bank, the Father ran from his son, but Barber apparently, broke the window out of the car, got the machete out and started chasing his Father around the bank's parking lot. Barber's Father ran into the bank and told an employee to lock the door.
At that point, Barber hopped into the car and sped away, later wrecking the vehicle.
Barber was jailed on February 24, 2011 in the BCSCC after being evaluated by the State of Alabama Mental Health in Searcy. Barber was sent to Searcy after being charged with Domestic Violence-Menacing, Reckless Endangerment, Disorderly Conduct, Kidnapping 1st degree and Robbery 1st degree with a machete.
At this time the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an Internal Affairs investigation that is paralleling the criminal investigation.
