Sentencings, arraignments and trials in Cuyahoga County: Court Watch
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- These are some of the cases that moved through Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court this week.
Patrick Parks, 18, of Cleveland: Trial ongoing in the robbery of a Mississippi family visiting relatives Dec. 29 in the Collinwood/Nottingham area of Cleveland. Parks, with two accomplices, is accused of holding the 60-year-old woman, 64-year-old man and 20-year-old man at gunpoint and taking their cash. An off-duty Cleveland police officer driving to his nearby home saw the defendants run to their truck and called in the license plate number, which revealed the truck had been stolen. Patrol officers spotted the truck as the trio parked on La Salle Avenue and ran off. They were arrested and police confiscated a revolver and BB gun.
The truck had been stolen from a 31-year-old woman who was held at gunpoint Christmas Eve. Police said they found some of the woman's Christmas gifts for her children at Parks' home. Accomplice Deonte Mims, 19, of Cleveland, pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to three years in prison. Christopher Cliff, 18, of Cleveland, pleaded guilty to robbery and awaits sentencing.
Lavarne Davis, 32, of Akron: Arraigned Monday and held on a $2,500 bond on a theft charge. He's accused of trying to steal $1,300 worth of DVDs and video games May 19 from the FYE store at SouthPark mall in Strongsville and running from security guards.
Reginald Smith, 28, of South Euclid: Arraigned Monday and held on a $2 million bond on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, possessing criminal tools and having a gun after a felony conviction. He's accused of shooting two bail bond agents, a 53-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, who tried to arrest him on drug charges May 21 at a store at 16208 St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland. The shooter dropped the gun and ran. Smith was arrested June 2. Smith is charged in a separate case with failure to comply with Cleveland Heights police May 10 during a traffic stop.
Kimberly Kessel, 45, of Cleveland: Sentenced Monday by Judge Jose Villanueva to 17 months in prison for breaking into an 86-year-old blind woman's Chamption Avenue home Aug. 3 and stealing jewelry and a check. Kessel cashed the check the next day for $7,500, Assistant Prosecutor Frankie Goldberg said. Kessel pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and grand theft and was ordered to pay $8,500 in restitution.
