AT&T rolls out mobile broadband network [The Garden City Telegram, Kan.]

According to Tony Wyche with AT&T public affairs, this marks the official rollout of AT&T 3G coverage following the company's acquisition of assets from RCC/Unicel last year. In July 2010, AT&T acquired former RCC/Unicel property and customers in Finney and other Kansas counties as a result of a Verizon Wireless divestiture. At that time, AT&T announced it would roll out its 3G service in the next 12 months to the acquired properties. "The important thing to note, however, is that the Unicel properties were all 2G when we acquired them," Wyche said. "We utilized their towers and invested significant dollars to upgrade them to 3G, which is what we are now launching." Wyche said that 3G is at least 10 times faster than 2G, and allows customers to talk and surf the Web simultaneously. "Investment like this continues to drive economic growth in our area," Paul Joseph, president of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce, said in an AT&T release. "We applaud state leaders like Senate President Steve Morris and State Representatives Reynaldo Mesa and Larry Powell for ensuring Kansas is a business friendly state. We are fortunate to have legislators, and our governor, Sam Brownback, who are supportive of forward-looking communications policy that encourages investment in Kansas and the jobs that follow." In addition to Garden City, AT&T also has recently announced mobile broadband availability in Liberal, Dodge City, Hays and Larned.
