Oregon universities see more non-traditional students graduate

Tyler Tjomsland / The Oregonian Christina Jensen married, graduated from a Portland alternative high school, attended college, dropped out when her husband got home from Iraq, and finally this spring, at age 31, returned to Portland State University to complete her degree in social work.Like Jensen, a mother of three, a growing share of Oregon students are taking longer, more complicated paths to a college degree.
College is tougher when juggling marriage, children, work and other life events, says Wilkins O'Riley Zinn, an education professor at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
"A sick child trumps a test sometimes," says Zinn, who earned her degrees later in life.
On some of Oregon's seven public universities, only a minority of students entered the university right out of high school and graduated four years later.
This year 18,896 graduated from state universities, and about 10,600 will participate in commencement this weekend.
About 10,600 students will graduate from Oregon's seven public universities this weekend: On Saturday , 9 a.m. at Southern Oregon University; 10 a.m. at Eastern Oregon University and Oregon Institute of Technology, 10:30 a.m. at Oregon State University and 11 a.m. at Western Oregon University;
On Sunday, 2 p.m. for Portland State University at the Rose Garden Arena;
On Monday, 9 a.m. at the University of Oregon. Another 900 students will graduate at 7 p.m. Friday from Portland Community College in Memorial Coliseum. Using age as a measure, about 38 percent of undergraduates are non-traditional. The proportion age 25 or older: 21 percent at the University of Oregon; 27 percent at Oregon State University ; 60 percent at PSU; and 68 percent at Eastern Oregon University.
Non-traditional students look even higher by another measure -- transfers into the school they are graduating from.

The car dealership wants to donate enough pajamas to get the women and children at the resource center through the cold season. So to show their appreciation, they'll give your car a 27-point safety inspection, tire rotation, car wash and vacuum for free.
When you consider how little pajamas cost, you've got quite a deal.
"You can go to Walmart and Kmart and some of the other stores and buy pajamas for $3 to $5 for the kids so they're really relatively inexpensive and we just really need your help," says Chris Gadzia, owner of Coos Bay Nissan, "so please come by."
Gadzia says they'll be collecting pajamas through Christmas and they've already had a few people come by.
One local woman decided to make the pajama drive a family affair.
"We had one particular lady who came by and said that her and her family had decided that they were gonna give up some presents to each other in lieu of buying pajamas for this program," says Gadzia, "so I thought that was really a great story and one that we ought to share."
Coos Bay Nissan is located at 1475 Ocean Boulevard, and is open six days a week.
