"There is no justification for keeping a car with that low a volume," said Dan Johnston, Volvo Cars of North America spokesman, in a phone conversation with Inside Line It can't be reliability, since Volvo has been below average for a good long time and even the older 240s, like the 240 GL wagon my mother owned, always seemed to have little issues crop up (like perpetually warpped rotors, a/c failure, power window motors, etc.) and you see more junky old Hondas and Toyotas on the road. Heck, it was still a good bet 4 years ago, but Volvo has let the poor thing languish into irrelevance. On a side note I'm almost 100% sure that most of those 434 V50s were sold in Vermont. The V50 is by far the most common small wagon you on the road here (not that there are many small wagons in the market these days), mostly T5 AWDs. Jetta wagons are a distant second. Volvo just needs to make a small compact car that can actually compete with the offerings of the other manufacturers. Ford and Gm seem to have caught up with the competition, why can't Volvo? The small car segment is extremely doggie dog right now with all the new contender such as the Elantra, Focus, Civic and Cruze. Makes that S40 looks stale and dated. Kind of wish Ford wouldve sold Volvo to Tata as well, theyve worked wonders for Jag. Not so sure what Volvos new chinese ownership plan is for the company, but lets just sit ans wait.
