WM softball lands two on all-state list

Whether it's your 20th state championship or your first, winning it all is something special.

Jesuit's baseball team and Hahnville's softball team attained those landmark accomplishments this spring, and those achievements are reflected in the Class 5A All-State teams as chosen by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

The baseball Blue Jays and the softball Tigers each had three players chosen to their respective teams, more than any other schools.

Additionally, Hahnville senior first baseman Elise deBruler is the 5A Outstanding Player for softball. Jesuit's Joey Latino is the 5A Coach of the Year for baseball.

Senior pitcher Aaron Nola of Catholic-Baton Rouge is the baseball's Outstanding Player, while David Bourque of Denham Springs is Coach of the Year for softball.

Nola, a returning All-Stater, was undefeated until a semifinals loss to Jesuit. The LSU signee finished 7-1 with 55 strikeouts in 38 innings and an 1.00 ERA, and he hit .364 with 29 RBI.

Hahnville's deBruler hit .480 with 29 RBI and four home runs for the Tigers, who went 31-3 and claimed the first softball state title in school history after losing in the finals last year.

Hahnville's 6-4 victory against Denham Springs in the championship game ended a Cinderella run for the Yellow Jackets, who entered the playoffs as the No. 14 seed and beat three higher seeds to finish 20-11.

Latino had spent three years out of coaching after previous stints at De La Salle and Archbishop Shaw, but he showed no rust in guiding the Blue Jays to a 29-5 record and a s 16-game winning streak.

Latino's team featured 13 seniors, including All-Stater shortstop Tony Fortier-Benson and outfielder Bubby Riley.

Fortier-Benson batted .481 with 27 RBI and 40 runs scored. Riley, Jesuit's leadoff hitter, hit .364 with 30 RBI and 38 runs scored and was MVP of the 5-4 victory against Lafayette in the finals.

The third Jesuit All-Stater is junior pitcher Emerson Gibbs. In the regular season Gibbs was 6-0 with a 1.38 ERA. In the playoffs, he added victories against Pineville and Barbe plus saves against Destrehan and Lafayette.

Along with Nola, Catholic senior outfielder Chris Sciambra is a repeat All-Stater after hitting .433 with eight home runs, 40 runs scored and 34 RBI.

Acadiana is represented by Cord Cockrell with a 10-0 record, 1.91 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 69 innings, and Stryker Trahan, who hit .460 with 31 RBI, 39 runs and five homers as catcher.
