Pedestrian killed on Middleground Road; boaters rescued on Tybee Island
A 46-year-old man was killed about 9 p.m. Saturday while trying to cross Middleground Road.
Savannah-Chatham metro police's Major Accident Investigations Team is working the case.
Calvin Goldwire was crossing with a companion near the intersection at Forest Ridge Drive when he was struck by a vehicle traveling south in the left lane of Middleground Road, according to a police report.
Goldwire was pronounced dead at Memorial University Medical Center.
Boaters, swimmers rescued on Tybee
Ten capsized boaters were plucked from the Back River at Tybee Island late Sunday afternoon, while on the ocean side, brisk winds and a strong incoming tide prompted 20 swimmer rescues by lifeguards.
Fire Chief Skip Sasser said a 16-foot Carolina Skiff capsized at 4:50 p.m., dumping its young adult boaters in the water. The fire department's Ocean Rescue unit began responding, as did U.S. Coast Guard Tybee Island and the Savannah-Chatham Marine Patrol.
"That's way too many people in a skiff that small," Sasser said. "We started scrambling everybody we had."
Mike Scarbrough, owner of Captain Mike's Dolphin Tour, was able to get to the boaters first and brought them to dock. He could not be reached Sunday evening. Lt. j.g. Matthew Kahley confirmed 10 boaters were rescued and that it was Scarbrough who assisted.
Starting about 4 p.m., Tybee lifeguards handled 20 water rescues, Sasser said. The winds and incoming tide created strong rip currents that troubled swimmers.
