Learning to sew for the conflicted and the doomed
More and more people pick up sewing than any other hobby. And more and more people become frustrated with sewing and discard it like an ugly dress. Here are some simple tips to get you started on sewing and ways to make it less frustrating.
First, no matter how sexy you think you’ll look in the Advanced Vogue dress, Do Not make it your first pattern to sew. Pick a super easy garment like an elasticized waist skirt or a sleeveless shell. Or if garments are not your thing a tote bag or pillowcase is a great place to start. There are countless patterns available online on sewing blogs and sewing retails sites. Most are free and are made for the beginner sewer.
Second, Pick easy care fabrics like cotton or polyester knits. Read the back of the pattern envelope for suggested materials to use. Avoid slippery fabrics like silk, chiffon and pretty much anything in the bridal or evening section of the fabric shop.
Third, Know thy Machine. Take your machine out for a long test drive. Get scrap material in any shape and type and sew fast, slow, straight lines and curves. The more you practice sewing on your machine, the better you’ll be able to handle it when it comes time to sew the garment. Test all the stitches that your machine has to offer. And, before you go to bed take your manual and read up on all the gadgets and fun things it does. Machine manuals next to sewing patterns and sewing books are a great bedtime read.
Fourth, find a great sewing club or take lessons at your local fabric shop. Sewing clubs are a great way to meet people and learn from seasoned seamstresses. When you buy a sewing machine take advantage of the classes they offer. Many will give free intro classes when you purchase a machine.
Lastly, when you are in your darkest hour and nothing is going right and you’ve just sewed the arm hole to the neck opening and now have a very peculiar turtleneck don’t despair. And, most importantly don’t give up. Just put it aside. Pour yourself a scotch and soda (or not) and wait till morning. The seam ripper awaits.
