Family Affair / The Wanis
The home: The apartment, with its plaster peeling, is in a gray building very close to the new Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv. We huff and puff up to the third floor.
Entering: The foyer is covered in darkly lacquered wood; to the left is a tidy kitchen with a microwave oven, a toaster, two refrigerators and dishes drying. There are also two rooms and a balcony.
Two rooms: The parents inhabit the smaller one (with a tiger print on the bedspread, a laptop and a table full of cosmetics). The bigger one has a divider that splits its space into two. On one side is a living room containing two sofas, a TV, a glass case for sets of dishes, a bureau holding artificial flowers and pictures of Jesus on the wall; on the other side is the children’s area.
Children’s area: Three abutting beds with colorful bedspreads.
Twilight time: Buses chug by past the window; three bicycles are crowded onto the balcony; cookies are served alongside strawberry-banana juice. We indulge.
Real estate: They’re renting, NIS 3,000 a month for 56 square meters. They have been here since last August, after living for a year in Zichron Yaakov.
Zichron Yaakov: “There was an order,” Adison says, “that refugees could not live between Hadera and Gedera.” The housing solution on the northern side of the forbidden zone (in Zichron Yaakov) was organized for them by Sharon Livneh, 32, an editor by profession and volunteer for the past three and a half years with ASSAF, a refugee aid organization.
Livelihoods and occupations: Adison is a cleaner in a restaurant on the Herzliya beachfront. “I clean everything,” he says, “dishes, floor, walls.” He works a six-day week (“Saturdays off”) from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M., commuting by bus (“I get traveling expenses”); he has lunch in the restaurant, earns NIS 5,000-5,500 a month, sometimes does overtime and likes his work. Back in Sudan he was a primary-school teacher, but he doesn’t think he will go back to teaching. He is not fluent in English, at least not at a teaching level, and Southern Sudan, which will become independent in July, has adopted English as its official language. The family speaks Arabic; the children have already mastered Hebrew.
Suzi’s occupation: She works four days a week, 7 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., as a chambermaid in a north Tel Aviv hotel; she commutes by bus, earns NIS 20.70 an hour, and is looking for a second job.
